Home #3 - Belvedere Beauty!

Any remodel can be a labor of love, but this one involved Labor and Love! We met the Sahm family when they approached us at a daycare holiday party and informed us that their daughter Ember, was our son Easton’s girlfriend. As we continued to talk we learned that they were expecting their second daughter in the coming months and that they wanted to remodel their home in part to prepare for her arrival.
The overall scope of the project was very large, so it was broken into phases in order to have the least impact on their day to day lives during the pregnancy. Upstairs, an office space and nearby half bath were reconfigured to a nursery with full en-suite bath. This change also impacted the layout of the laundry room and entrance from the garage. Sections of the kitchen cabinetry were also re-worked or re-created to accommodate new Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances and to increase pantry storage space. New custom cabinets also now flank the fireplace and new flooring and paint were updated throughout the home.
The long precarious stairwell was adapted to add safety and style through the creation of a landing, updated flooring and steel work handrails.
The lower level of the home was almost completely unfinished and had been used primarily as an enormous art studio. The large space was carved into several smaller zones and rooms to add warmth and visual interest. Family and friends often visit from out of town, so the homeowners wanted to transform this underutilized space into a comfortable retreat for guests, as well as for their own growing family.
In the mother-in-law shower, a custom designed mosaic accent wall was hand built and serves as the focal point of the spacious spa retreat. The frameless shower glass was recessed into channels in the dropped ceiling so that no hardware was visible. Large format tiles were installed on the underside of the shower ceiling and LED uplighting accents the space above.
The long narrow storage space that was previously used for art storage was repurposed into an indoor gym. A large island was added to the existing cabinetry to create a custom kitchenette space. The details from the upstairs living area were replicated in the media room for a consistent feel. A recessed projection screen and LED uplighting were added to the dropped ceiling to add warmth to the large space.
We are very proud to be part of the Austin NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes this year! Come out on September 24th and 25th to view the various projects and vote for your favorite!
Oh, and just in case you are curious, Easton and Ember are still dating. In fact after their first date, 2 year old Ember went to school the next day and told the teachers that she and Easton “went on a date without mommies and daddies”, even though we absolutely were there to capture their first kiss.
